GPS-SpeedSailing
record requirements

in speedsailing all records are governed by the rules of the World Speed Sailing Record Council (WSSRC) a division of the International Sailing Federation (ISAF)

the world speed record is based on a one-way leg of exactly 500 metres
timing is by video equipment between fixed transits on land or by survey quality GPS equipment with trackpoints recorded every 1/10th of a second and a horizontal precision estimate no greater than 0.1 meters

currently the outright record is held by a sailboard at 49.09 knots

record breaking attempts are hindered by the equipment needed to time the events, video timing requires a surveyed course and fixed transits with multiple cameras needed to record the attempt; survey GPS equipment is bulky and expensive

there are many potential record breaking locations in the world but few have access to the infrastructure needed to support an attempt

with the rapid advances in GPS technology now is the time to develop a system that lowers the cost and allows record breaking anywhere in the world conditions are ideal
